Discussions & Debates > Primary School Admissions

Is your child due to start school in September 2009?
Have you been disappointed by the result of the recent school admissions process?

We are parents of 4 year olds who live in Warwick Gates. Our children have not been allocated a place at Briar Hill (their priority school) or Bishops Tachbrook. In fact the school they have been allocated is outside the area.

We are not prepared to accept this.

We want to campaign to resolve the situation of too few school places for the many children on the estate. We want the County Council to increase local school capacity in both the short-term (a temporary classroom?) and the long-term. We have the backing of James Plaskitt MP and Councillor Bernard Kirton, but have been advised to get the support of other parents. Please contact us if:
Your child did not get into the school of your choice this year or in previous years.

You have children who are younger and may be facing this situation in the future.

This hasn’t affected you but you would like to offer your support

PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE THIS – WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Dave,
I think that you will find this forum largely unread. It's a shame but that's the long and short of it. So if you are passionate about your issue I would suggest finding an alternative.

We recently leafleted the area of the Warwick Gates Estate which we believe had been affected by the distance criteria (0.834 miles from Briar Hill). The response so far has been encouraging. 50 families have contacted us by phone or e-mail to advise that they have been either directly affected by the lack of places at Briar Hill, have concerns for the future or wish to offer their general support. Of these:

17 children have been directly affected this school year as a result of not being offered a place at Briar Hill Infants. These children have been offered places at a total of 7 alternative schools - Whitnash, Kingsway, Shrubland Street, Sydenham, Radford Semele, Westgate, Brookhurst.

We have updated, via e-mail, all of those who have contacted us and supplied their e-mail address on our actions/findings to date.

We have also shared the results of the leaflet campaign with various councillors, James Plaskitt MP, Chris White, amongst others
